What is a DOT Physical Exam?
A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical is a health examination required by the FMCSA. It evaluates whether a driver is physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to operate a commercial vehicle. The exam focuses on identifying potential health risks that could interfere with your ability to drive safely — such as untreated high blood pressure, vision loss, hearing impairment, or chronic medical conditions.
Who is Required to Get a DOT Medical Exam?
You are required to pass a DOT medical exam in Idaho Falls if you operate a commercial vehicle that:
Has a gross combination weight rating or gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more
Is designed or used to transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation
Is designed or used to transport more than 15 passengers (including the driver), even if not for compensation
Is used to transport hazardous materials requiring placarding under federal regulations
What to Expect During Your Commercial Driver Physical
Our certified medical examiners conduct a comprehensive FMCSA-mandated evaluation. The exam typically takes 30–45 minutes and includes:
Vision Testing
At least 20/40 acuity in each eye (with or without corrective lenses) and at least a 70-degree field of vision.
Hearing Assessment
Must perceive a forced whisper from at least 5 feet (with or without a hearing aid).
Blood Pressure & Pulse
Cardiovascular screening. High blood pressure can be managed with physician-prescribed treatments.
Urinalysis
Screens for protein, blood, and sugar. Note: this is not a drug screen — drug screens can be performed separately if requested by your employer.
