Dr. Chance Smith is an Idaho Falls native who is proud to bring advanced surgical care back to the community where he grew up. As a board-certified general surgeon, he treats a wide range of conditions, from gallbladder disease and hernias to complex cancer cases. He takes time to explain every option clearly so patients and their families feel confident and informed before, during and after surgery.

Dr. Smith is highly experienced in da Vinci robotic surgery, a minimally invasive approach that can mean smaller incisions, less pain and a faster return to daily life. In 2025, he performed more da Vinci robotic procedures than any other surgeon in Idaho.

Education & Training

Dr. Smith was born and raised in Idaho Falls. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Idaho and Carroll College, graduating with honors, and earned his medical degree with honors from Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Wichita, where he was named Most Outstanding Resident of his graduating class. He is board certified in general surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
