If you’ve never been to urgent care, or you haven’t been in a while, it helps to know what happens when you walk through the door. Here’s a simple, step-by-step look at a walk-in visit at Ridgeline Medical in Idaho Falls, what to bring, and when the ER is the better choice.
Key Takeaways
- No appointment needed. Walk in during clinic hours, or call ahead at 208-715-9990.
- On-site lab and digital X-ray help us diagnose and treat many problems in one visit.
- Bring your ID, insurance card and a list of your medicines.
- Your visit connects to our family medicine team for easy follow-up.
- Emergencies go to the ER. For chest pain, trouble breathing or stroke signs, call 911.
What Walk-In Urgent Care Is For
Walk-in urgent care treats illnesses and injuries that need attention today but aren’t life-threatening, such as:
- Colds, flu, COVID-19, sore throats and ear infections
- Sprains, strains and possible minor fractures
- Cuts that may need stitches
- Urinary tract infections
- Rashes, bites and minor burns
- Mild allergic reactions
It’s a good choice when your regular provider can’t see you soon enough, and it usually costs much less than the ER for the same minor problem.
Your Visit, Step by Step
1. Check in at the front desk
Our front desk team will greet you, take your ID and insurance card, and have you fill out a short registration form with your contact information, medical history, medicines and allergies. If you’ve been here before, this goes even faster.
2. Initial check
A member of our clinical team will take you to an exam room, ask what brought you in, and check your vital signs, like temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen level.
3. See a provider
One of our providers will talk with you about your symptoms and examine you. Our urgent care is overseen by Dr. Danny Spencer, our lead physician. Dr. Spencer spent years working in emergency departments before returning to Idaho, and he has a special interest in rural and sports medicine. You may also see another member of our provider team.
4. Tests or X-rays, if needed
If your provider needs more information, our on-site lab and digital X-ray are right down the hall. That can mean a rapid strep or flu test, a urine test, blood work, or an X-ray of an injured ankle, often with answers before you leave.
5. Treatment and a plan
Your provider will explain what’s going on and treat it. That might mean stitches, a splint, a prescription sent to your pharmacy, or instructions for care at home. You’ll also learn what warning signs to watch for.
6. Checkout and follow-up
Before you head home, you’ll take care of any copay or self-pay balance. Because Ridgeline is also a primary care clinic, your visit goes into the same chart our family medicine providers use. If you need a follow-up, it can be scheduled here, and sometimes it can happen by telehealth.
What to Bring
- A photo ID
- Your insurance card (we accept most major plans; call to verify yours)
- A list of your current medicines, including vitamins and supplements
- Any allergies to medicines
- A debit or credit card for any copay or self-pay balance
- For a child: a parent or guardian, and a comfort item
Tips for a Smoother Visit
- Call ahead at 208-715-9990 if you have questions about whether we can treat your problem.
- Jot down when your symptoms started and anything you’ve already tried.
- Wear loose clothing if you’ve hurt an arm, leg or shoulder.
- Visit times can vary with how busy the clinic is, so plan a little extra time.
When to Go to the ER Instead

- Fainting, a seizure or loss of consciousness
- Severe bleeding, a serious head injury, or a bone through the skin
- A severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, lips or throat
- Sudden, severe belly pain
